What is the "Smart Growth" Law?

Wisconsin's "Smart Growth" Law is a comprehensive planning initiative signed into law by Governor Thompson as part of the state's 1999-2000 budget. The rationale behind the law is that comprehensive planning provides the best guide possible for government leaders and citizens when making responsible decisions about the physical, social and economic development of their communities.
