The Winneconne–Poygan Fire District is proud to provide fire protection and emergency medical services to three municipalities:
- Village of Winneconne
- Town of Winneconne
- Town of Poygan
Our mission is to safeguard lives, property, and the environment through prevention, education, and emergency response.
Who We Are
We are a fully volunteer fire department consisting of:
- 50 trained firefighters
- 20 emergency medical responders
Our team is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and responds to a variety of emergencies including:
- Structure fires
- Medical emergencies
- Vehicle accidents
- Grass and wildland fires
- Rescue operations
All personnel receive ongoing training to ensure effective, safe, and timely emergency response.
Response Information
Each year, the Winneconne–Poygan Fire District responds to hundreds of calls across our service area.
Average response times: Volunteers typically respond within minutes of being dispatched, depending on the nature and location of the emergency.
Coverage area: The fire district effectively covers urban, suburban, and rural areas across all three municipalities.
Fire Safety Tips
We encourage all residents to take fire safety seriously. Follow these tips to help protect your home and family:
- Install and test smoke alarms monthly.
- Change batteries in smoke detectors twice a year.
- Keep flammable materials away from heat sources.
- Use metal containers with lids to dispose of fireplace or grill ashes.
- Create an escape plan and practice it with your family.
- Never leave cooking unattended.
Burn Permits
Before burning, always check if a permit is required and what conditions apply.
Village of Winneconne
- Recreational fires (in fire pits) are permitted with proper safety measures.
- No permit is required for small recreational fires.
Town of Winneconne and Town of Poygan
- Burn permits are required for open burning.
- Permits are issued by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Failure to follow burning regulations may result in fines or liability for damages.
