About the Cemetery

The Village of Winneconne cemeteries are owned and maintained by the Village, for the benefit of all citizens. The original plat was founded in 1871 by the Winneconne Cemetery Association, which conveyed the cemetery property and trust funds to the Village in 1962. The Cemetery Association made several additions to the original plat between 1871 and 1962. There have been two additions under Village ownership: the John M. White Addition in 1969 and a two-acre land purchase in 1992. Rules and regulations are established by the Cemetery Board, approved by the Village Board, to ensure proper maintenance and to prevent abuse and destruction.

The three Village cemeteries are:
  1. Memorial Cemetery
  2. John M. White Cemetery
  3. Pioneer Cemetery (historical marker, graves are not available for purchase)

Recommended Decoration Practices

To help maintain the dignity and upkeep of our cemetery grounds, we ask all visitors to follow these decoration guidelines. These practices help prevent accidental damage and ensure safe, efficient lawn care.

The two below locations are areas that can be decorated. These areas are clear of grass and out of the way of mowing and trimming equipment, helping to preserve both your decorations and our landscaping.

  •  Foundation Slab
    • The flat cement slab located directly beneath the headstone (called the foundation) is the best place for:
      • Flower vases
      • Wreaths
      • Seasonal or personal décor

In this image, the decorations should be properly placed on the foundation of the headstone, the cement slab shown under the headstone.

  • Top of the Headstone
    • The top surface of the headstone is also an acceptable place for flowers and other attachments, as long as they are securely fastened. There are specific attachments made for this purpose.

What to Avoid

Do Not Place Decorations in the Grass

Please do not place any items in the grass surrounding the foundation or headstone. Decorations that are improperly placed in the grass can:
    • Be easily damaged by lawn mowers or trimmers
    • Obstruct maintenance work
    • Pose safety hazards to our crew
For a more detailed description of what is and isn't acceptable, please refer to Village Ordinance 273-6. This ordinance outlines all cemetery regulations regarding decorations, maintenance, and general use.   Cemetery Ordinances
